To achieve the heat pump installation targets set by Government, trained installers who understand low temperature heating systems and who are confident with installing and maintaining air source heat pumps are vital to reach Net Zero carbon goals. The Grant UK Training Academy delivers in-depth product training courses, both in-person and online, on the Aerona air-to-water heat pump ranges as well as OFTEC heat pump qualification courses.

Locations and schedule

Grant UK delivers training courses at centres throughout England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. These centres include the main Grant UK Training Academy in Swindon, Wiltshire, where their full suite of courses is available, the GTEC Centre in Hawes, North Yorkshire, where heat pump training in Yorkshire is held along with other renewable training courses, and at the Livingston Centre, West Lothian, where renewable technology training is delivered making heat pump training in Scotland more accessible. In addition, Grant UK delivers regional product courses using the facilities of recognised training partners as well as online via the Grant eLearning Academy.

Who should attend

The heat pump courses and qualifications delivered by Grant UK’s Trainers are suitable for domestic heating and renewable installers who are looking to expand their knowledge of air source heat pump technology. The Aerona³ and Aerona 290 ASHP courses are suitable for heating engineers and installers of all levels, from apprentices and those new to working with heat pumps through to more experienced heat pump installers who want to develop their understanding of the specific product features of Grant heat pumps. 

Installers, specifiers and system designers will not only find Grant’s product training courses of interest but also the availability of the OFT21-504A: Installation, commissioning and servicing of Air Source Heat Pumps and the OFT21-504D: Design of Heat Pump systems qualification courses, especially for those seeking OFTEC registration and MCS certification.

Course content and format

All the heat pump training courses delivered by the Grant UK Training Academy combine theory learning with hands-on opportunities with the product. Each course will vary but most comprise of a theory session in the classroom followed by a practical session with the heat pump units, giving engineers the chance to put their learning into practice in one of Grant UK’s dedicated renewables training workshops. 

The Grant heat pump product training courses cover core topics relating to either the Aerona³ or Aerona 290 heat pump range, such as heat pump operation, controller and settings, installation best practices, commissioning, servicing and fault finding. Meanwhile, OFTEC heat pump qualification courses follow the course contents as specified by OFTEC. Depending on the course, Grant UK will also provide training materials and resources.

How to train as a heat pump installer?

Do I need a qualification to attend training?

Some courses have prerequisites such as a minimum number of years experience as a heating engineer or holding specific qualifications. For the Grant product courses, there are no qualifications or prerequisite requirements for attending this training.

What accreditations can I gain from heat pump courses?

This will depend on the course you attend and pass. For example, installers who successfully complete either the Aerona³ or Aerona 290 ASHP Installer courses will be eligible to apply to join the G1 Installer Scheme. For installers and engineers who attend and pass the OFTEC Air Source Heat Pump Installer qualification course, they will be able to apply for OFTEC registration and for MCS certification. 

How long is a typical heat pump course?

Grant heat pump product courses are usually 1 day in duration. The OFTEC heat pump qualification courses and assessment can be between 2-4 days in duration, depending on which qualifications are being taken.
