Solar Thermal Training

A solar thermal hot water system is an excellent addition to new and existing central heating systems because it can allow a household to use the sun’s free energy to fulfil a significant proportion of their hot water demand. Whether you install traditional fossil fuel systems or renewable heating systems, attending solar thermal training through the Grant UK Training Academy will equip you with valuable knowledge about this type of renewable energy.

Solar Thermal Courses Offered

Solar Thermal product training is delivered by Grant UK’s Training Academy to help installers and engineers understand the Grant solar thermal range and accessories, as well as understanding solar thermal system installation, servicing and maintenance.

Locations and schedule

Grant UK’s in-person solar thermal training course is available at several locations. At the Training Academy Headquarters in Swindon, Wiltshire, there is a dedicated solar thermal training workshop which features a training roof for practical, hands-on training. A Grant solar thermal training roof is also installed at the Livingston Training Centre in West Lothian where the Grant Solar Thermal Systems installer course is delivered. Grant solar thermal training is available in North Yorkshire as well at the GTEC Centre in Hawes. For heating professionals interested in an overview of Grant UK’s solar thermal products and range, an express solar thermal course is available via the online Grant eLearning Academy.

The Grant Solar Thermal Systems 1-day course is scheduled most months, with each training venue having its own availability. Please click here to search for solar thermal training in your local area, view upcoming course dates and submit an enquiry for the course date you would like to book.

Course content and format

The solar thermal training provided through the Grant UK Training Academy combines a session of classroom theory followed by a hands-on session which involves installers and engineers undertaking practical training using a training roof with solar thermal collectors installed. The theory covers the principles of operation of a Grant solar thermal system, solar thermal system design, the construction of collectors and how to install them, pump station, controls and filling/commissioning procedures. Meanwhile, the practical session typically includes hands-on training with an on-roof collector installation and goes into more detail with the filling, flushing and commissioning procedures. Please note, the practical training session may vary at different training venues.

Benefits of solar thermal training

While a solar thermal hot water system is not a primary heat source, it is an excellent addition to both new and existing heating systems because it can reduce the demand on the main boiler or heat pump. Some benefits to completing solar thermal training include:

  • Meet market demand for solar thermal system enquiries and installations as households strive to be more environmentally friendly
  • Access extended guarantees by becoming a G1 Solar Thermal Installer when you successfully pass the course (Terms and Conditions apply)
  • Expand your services by offering your customers the additional option of this renewable energy system for hot water demand
  • Install complementary products to work alongside renewables and traditional heating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book onto a training course?

To book onto a course at Grant UK's Training Academy, you can either submit a booking enquiry via our website or you can contact our Training Department directly via training@grantuk.com. Please click here to view our product training and qualification courses, where you can read the course descriptions and submit a booking enquiry for upcoming course dates.

Do I need prior experience with solar thermal?

No, you do not need previous experience of working with solar thermal to attend Grant training. The Grant Solar Thermal Systems training course is designed for installers and engineers with all levels of experience, from those new to solar thermal systems through to those with more experience.

How is solar thermal different to heat pumps?

A solar thermal system will use the sun’s energy to heat hot water within the central heating system, fulfilling hot water demand at the taps, showers and baths – a solar thermal system will not heat rooms. Whereas an air source heat pump will fulfil the space heating demand and hot water demand (not simultaneously).

What qualification can I get when I attend a solar thermal course?

After successfully completing Grant solar thermal system training, an installer will be eligible to apply to join the G1 Installer Scheme for Grant Solar Thermal System installations. No formal qualifications are issued after completing this product training.

What if I cannot attend in-person training?

If you book onto a training course and are unable to attend, you should notify the Grant UK Training Department as soon as possible. The Training Team will then offer you an alternative date for the next available course. Some of Grant UK’s training courses are available online via the Grant eLearning Academy
