How do you pair wireless thermostats using the Aerona Smart Controller

The Grant Aerona Smart Heat Pump System Controller is compatible with wireless thermostats (picture below) in conjunction with an installed wireless receiver, both of which are supplied by Grant UK. Pairing one or more wireless thermostats, as part of a Grant air source heat pump installation, can be completed with ease via the Aerona Smart Controller and its touchscreen display.

When to pair wireless thermostats

The wireless thermostats can be paired during the system configuration process when the heat pump and controller are initially set up, or from either the heating circuit panel or service settings which are accessible at anytime via the Aerona Smart Controller’s home screen.

To learn more about the system configuration set up for this smart heat pump controller from Grant UK, please watch our video tutorial here. Heat pump installers are also recommended to refer to the Aerona Smart Heat Pump Controller manual for further set-up assistance and guidance.

How to pair wireless thermostats

Up to three wireless thermostats can be used with the Aerona Smart Controller using a single wireless receiver and these are compatible with both the Grant Aerona³ R32 air source heat pumps and the Aerona 290, Grant’s range of R290 heat pumps.

Check the wireless thermostat channel

Before starting the process of pairing wireless thermostats, you must ensure that each wireless thermostat uses a different channel. To adjust the channel, go to the display screen on the wireless thermostat and follow these steps:

1.    Hold the ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons simultaneously for three seconds
2.    The screen will then change (to show you the username) – scroll down using the ‘down’ button until parameter 35 (P35) shows in the top right hand corner on the screen and then tap the ‘tick’ button
3.    The screen will then display the address currently assigned to the wireless thermostat – ‘Ad 1’ is the default address which will flash with the parameter editing symbol visible
4.    Press the ‘up’ or ‘down’ button to amend the address and then confirm by pressing the ‘tick’ button
5.    When finished, hold the ‘tick’ button which will move you back through the user menu to return to the home screen.

Please note, when you are only using a single wireless thermostat, you do not need to set the address on the thermostat and you can skip to the next step (adding a wireless thermostat to the Aerona Smart Controller). If more than one wireless thermostat is being used, please repeat the above steps to complete this process for the other wireless thermostats to be paired.

Adding a wireless thermostat to Smart Controller

To add a thermostat, go to the Aerona Smart Controller’s touchscreen display and select the ‘Settings’ icon (pictured below) in the bottom left hand corner.

The settings menu will then display – select ‘Service Settings’, type in the 4 digit password (0000) and tap ‘enter’. On the next screen, select ‘Installation Controller’ from the menu as shown below.

Scroll through the menu to find the circuit that you want to assign a wireless thermostat to and select the relevant circuit. Next, scroll through the circuit options and select ‘Thermostat’ to begin the pairing process.

Select ‘Wireless Thermostat’ from the options and press the forward arrow to proceed, following the instructions which appear on the screen. During this pairing process, you will need to return to the wireless thermostats’ display screens to complete the following steps on all of the required thermostats you want to pair:

1.    Press and hold the ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons simultaneously for three seconds to enter the settings menu
2.    Use the ‘up’ button to scroll to find parameter 3 (P03) in the top right hand corner and then tap the ‘tick’ button
3.    When the pairing with the wireless receiver is complete, the thermostat will show ‘Succ’ and ‘End’ on its screen. After a short while, the ‘alarm’ and ‘radio’ symbols will also no long be visible on the thermostat screen.

Please note, it is important to ensure that all the thermostats are paired at this stage – you will have a four minute window to complete this process.

Once this stage is completed, the wireless thermostat(s) will be saved to the memory of the wireless receiver. You can then hold the ‘tick’ button on the wireless thermostat to return to its home screen.

Completing the pairing process

Return to the Aerona Smart Controller’s touchscreen display and tap the forward arrow to load the list of paired thermostats. Ensure you select the correct thermostat for the circuit – for example, if the wireless thermostat’s address is ‘Ad 1’, it will be identified as ‘eSTER x40: T1’ on the Aerona Smart Controller’s display. Once you have selected the correct thermostat, confirm the thermostat choice by tapping the ‘tick’.

If you are adding more than one wireless thermostat, you can then select the ‘back’ arrow to return to the menu where you can select the next circuit. Once you have selected your next circuit, scroll down to find ‘Thermostat’, select ‘Wireless thermostat’ and enter the pairing mode by selecting the forward arrow. When the pairing instructions appear, tap the forward arrow again to see the list of paired thermostats. Ensure you select the correct thermostat which must be different to the thermostat that you have paired to the first circuit – for example, ‘eSTERx40: T2’ would be the identifier for the wireless thermostat with the address of ‘Ad 2’. Once you have selected the correct thermostat, confirm your thermostat choice by pressing the ‘tick’ on screen.

Once you have paired the required wireless thermostat(s), you can return to the Aerona Smart Controller’s home screen using the back arrow.
