When the air temperature outside drops below 3ºC, an air source heat pump’s efficiency levels can reduce but the heat pump will still continue to operate to fulfil the heating and hot water requirements. The Aerona³ and Aerona 290 air source heat pumps are designed to work in air temperatures as low as -20ºC so they can operate in cold weather below freezing. Consumers may notice that during cold weather, as the heat pump is not working at its optimal efficiencies, their energy consumption may increase during colder spells.
It is important, as part of the customer handover, that consumers understand how their new air source heat pump system will operate throughout the year and to expect higher running costs during the winter months, as is common will all types of heating system. Provided below is an estimated breakdown of a household's annual energy consumption with a heat pump (Grant UK Heat Pump Handover Guide, October 2024):

Our video guide below also provides additional support for your customers which heat pump installers can share when carrying out their system handovers.
