Support for your Underfloor Heating System

A zone is an area or a room that is controlled independently via a room thermostat. A house could be split into two zones for example upstairs and downstairs or each room could be classed as a separate zone. Zone control gives you greater control over your heating and ensures each area is at optimum temperature.

Operating your underfloor heating system with a 'setback' control will maintain the floor at a minimum temperature at all times, avoiding the wasteful use of energy to continually reheat the floor from cold. Your installer can help set up the setback controls for your underfloor heating system during the handover stage.

When the setback facility is being used in a well-insulated, airtight property, the room temperature can be maintained for a prolonged period and may not drop low enough to provide a demand during the setback period which can impact the UFH operation.

Grant's underfloor heating systems operate at their most efficient when they are not frequently switched off and on. The floor screed takes time to heat up, but once up to temperature it only requires a small amount of heat to maintain this condition. Switching the system off and on, results in the floor losing temperature, requiring more heat input to reach temperature again.

This will vary and be based on the individual but generally 21ºC is the ideal temperature for living areas such as living rooms and dining rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms tend to be slightly cooler at around 18 ºC. What is important is that whatever the room, it is recommended that an underfloor heating system is never completely switched off – instead, “setback control” operation should be set up.

The balancing of an underfloor heating system should be carried out by a heating engineer. Please contact a local engineer if your underfloor heating system requires balancing.

Underfloor heating systems are low maintenance. When your heating engineer does an annual service of your boiler or air source heat pump, that can be a good opportunity for them to also check your underfloor heating and carry out a few checks on the system to ensure it is working well.
