Grant whole house heating system installed at self-build home
The self-build property in Cornwall where G1 Installer, Tom Smith, has installed a Grant R290 heat pump.

An Aerona 290 air source heat pump has been installed alongside a hot water cylinder, solar thermal system and underfloor heating system all supplied by Grant UK to fulfil the space heating and hot water requirements for a new home in Cornwall. The Grant renewable heating system has provided the homeowner with a sustainable solution for their home heating, complementing the build’s wider eco-friendly ethos.

The owners of the property commenced their self-build project in 2024. When it came to choosing the right type of heating system for their Passiv house, they turned to their heating engineer, Tom Smith of Tom Smith Plumbing & Heating and Greenwave Renewables SW Ltd, who are local Grant UK G1 Installers. Working closely with the homeowner and Grant UK’s Design, Specification, Sales and Technical Teams, Tom developed a whole heating system using Grant products with the heat source, cylinder and heat emitters all supplied by Grant UK.

The installation of the heating system comprised of an Aerona 290 9kW air-to-water heat pump which has been installed alongside a 300ltr QR Twin Coil hot water cylinder. A two panel Grant Solar Thermal System has also been fitted into the property’s roof, which is supporting the heat pump with the production of hot water. Underfloor heating has been laid throughout the property with the Grant Uflex UFH system installed downstairs and the Grant Uflex Overlay UFH system being fitted in the rooms upstairs.

By early Summer 2025, the installation of the renewable heating system had been completed by Tom and his team. The 4-5 bedroom home has exceptional levels of insulation and Tom has designed the heat pump heating system as an almost entirely open loop system, achieving uniform temperatures through the property of between 21ºC-22ºC with the heat pump’s flow temperature set to 45ºC.
