In recent years we’ve devised the Grant WinterSOL, which provides householders with a fully heated cylinder of hot water during periods of low solar thermal gain, therefore ensuring satisfactory hot water demand.

Another device, and possibly one of the most successful of all the integrated solutions, is the Grant CombiSOL. This product was first to market in the UK, enabling installers to join a combination boiler and solar thermal – a predicament that had even the most competent of installers scratching their heads. In short, it controls the outlet temperature of stored water produced by a solar thermal and directs the flow either directly to the hot water outlet or via the combi boiler. The CombiSOL stole the show in the category of ‘Innovative Product of the Year 2012’ at OFTEC’s annual awards last year.

Paul Wakefield, Managing Director of Grant UK, the leading oil boiler and renewable solutions manufacturer, was quick to welcome the announcement from DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) that it was responding to pressure from the industry to see more generous Renewable Heat Premium Payments to support the market as a stop gap until the Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI) kicks in in the Spring of 2014.

DECC has announced that the RHPP to homeowners will double which is good news for Grant UK who supply air source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal systems through heating merchants to the trade. The RHPP will increase from £850 to £1300 for air source heat pump installations, from £950 to £2,000 for biomass boiler installations and from £300 to £600 for solar thermal systems.

“We’re grateful for any incentives from Government that encourages people to invest in renewable systems,” says Paul Wakefield. “It seems to be an acknowledgement that they’ve let the renewable energy solutions sector down quite badly as a result of the delays there have been with the introduction of the RHI and I’m confident that these increases in grants available will have a positive effect on sales. It’s a welcome boost.”

At the same time it was announced that future recipients of an RHPP will have to undergo a Green Deal assessment to qualify for their pay out – a process that will cost homeowners between £100 and £150, considered a reasonable way to increase the number of Green Deal Assessments that are undertaken, which, although increasing month on month, have been decidedly disappointing since the launch of Green Deal earlier in the year.

Heating controls hugely affect system performance and efficiency and the correct control system not only makes it easier to maintain a more comfortable temperature within the home, but it keeps heating bills and CO2 emissions down by using less fuel.

The system includes a 5-year product guarantee and is suitable for individual dwellings, properties with several zones, installations with multiple heat sources or a combination of different heating technologies including renewables.

Along with allowing a number of heating appliances to be combined and accurately controlled, the controls can additionally provide many other benefits including individually controlled heating zones, the option to switch the system to hot water priority and boiler lead/lag rotation, equalising appliance running times for longevity of products.

Grant’s Design Department can also offer tailored system drawings incorporating these controls to make life easier for installers.

Following the success of the standard Aerona air to water heat pump models, and in response to comments and ideas from the trade, Grant UK has developed the Aerona HE range. The brief for this was straightforward – bigger single phase outputs, higher efficiencies at lower operating temperatures and quieter noise levels, whilst maintaining the tried and tested features of the existing Aerona range.

To achieve better COP’s the Aerona HE was designed with larger evaporator surface areas, increasing the amount of air flow through the unit. The fans run at lower speeds and this coupled with the improved internal insulation has successfully decreased noise levels. The HE models also use R410a refrigerant, which allows the unit to operate at lower ambient temperatures.

As with all products in the Aerona range, the models are designed to be installer friendly and come complete with factory fitted weather compensation controls, 3kW electrical backup* and flexible flow and return connections, so there are no hidden extras. *Note: to fully comply with MIS3005, the backup heater should not be energized until the minimum design temperature has been reached (e.g. -3ºC).

The new Aerona HE is available in 6.5kW, 8.5kW, 12.5kW, 17.5kW and 21.5kW outputs, not including the immersion back up (tested to EN 14511 at 7ºC air/35ºC water).

Visit Grant UK’s stand N2950, for your opportunity to see the new Aerona HE range. The show is being held at ExCeL, London and will be open from Tuesday 5th March – Thursday 7th March 2013.

Grant UK will be launching their solution to this conundrum at Ecobuild in March. The SpiraVAC is a wood pellet vacuum system that quickly and conveniently moves pellets from a Grant external store to the Spira boiler without the need for an auger. The fully integrated vacuum is capable of pulling pellets around obstacles at distances of up to 20 metres, allowing maximum flexibility when designing the heating system.

Visit Grant UK’s stand N2950, for your opportunity to see the SpiraVAC in action.

The show is being held at ExCeL, London and will be open from Tuesday 5th March – Thursday 7th March 2013.

Starting on 28th January 2013, the Incentive is on a first-come, first-served basis (until funds last) where householders claim cash-back from the Government on a number of energy saving improvements like insulation, double glazed windows and central heating boilers. There is no limit to the number of improvements that can be made, the more installed, the more grant money can be claimed.

Conditions include that the property must undergo a Green Deal Assessment and have the improvements installed by an Approved Green Deal Installer within a certain timeframe (six months for insulation and three months for all energy saving measures) to qualify for the payback.

At present it has been guaranteed that £40m will be available for the current scheme rates, but this amount is likely to reduce when the initial budget is exhausted. For more information, visit the DECC website.

The Clean Air Act was brought in to reduce smog and air pollution. It was an important milestone in the development of a legal framework for environmental protection. Involving a number of measures to reduce air pollution like ‘smoke control areas’ in some cities where only smokeless fuels could be burnt, it pushed households towards cleaner sources of heat like gas and electricity to reduce the pollution.

In these control areas it would be an offence to emit smoke from a solid fuel/biomass boiler if it wasn’t listed as an exempt appliance. The current fine is around £1,000 for the offence.

As the Company moves further into new technologies, it is imperative to match the sales growth with adequately trained service personnel. Positioned around the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) the Team is fully trained on all new and existing Grant product ranges including oil and wood pellet boilers, solar thermal, air source heat pumps and cylinders; and will carry first line spares to assist installers and third party service engineers in the field.

Neil Sawers, Technical Manager for Grant UK comments: “Our customers expect a highly efficient service, not just highly efficient products. If we cannot meet the level of service expected then we have failed. Rather than wait for this to happen, we have pre-empted our installer and engineer needs for tomorrow, by creating this support network today”.
